What Are Hopi Ear Candles?
Ear candles are an ancient, mild and natural therapy and have been used by the Native Americans for many years. The ear candle has been named after the Native American Hopi tribe of Arizona, to whom the healing properties of the candle have been known for hundreds of years. The candles used are based on the traditional Hopi candle, are hollow inside, and are made from 100% beeswax and pesticide free cotton. They also contain Sage for antiseptic and anti inflammatory properties, St Johns Wort to balance and Chamomile to soothe.
The candle is placed over the ear orifice and ignited. It is only allowed to burn to within 4 inches of the end of the candle. As it burns it produces a gentle local heat. The warm air combined with the oil and herbs soften the wax inside the ear and draw it into the base of the hollow candle. The candle is then removed, and the ear and surrounding area is then massaged. The treatment is repeated on the other ear and then a holistic facial massage is carried out, paying particular attention to the sinus areas.
When Can Ear Candles Help?

Ear Candling is also a great treatment to have when recovering from a cold or 'flu, or simply to de-stress and clear the head. The aromatherapy effects of the candle promote relaxation and stress reduction.
Ear candles are also a much safer way of helping to remove excess or compacted ear wax from the ear canal. Syringing with water at the GP's surgery is now often discouraged because of the danger of damage to the ear drum. Ear candles are much safer and are just as effective. If you wish to have ear candling for the removal of ear wax, then I suggest that you use some eardrops in your ear for a couple of days before coming for ear candling, to help loosen and soften the wax. A couple of drops of olive oil are fine, as are eardrops such as Otosan.
Are There Times I Cannot Use Ear Candles?
Ear candles cannot be used in the following cases:
- if the ear drum is perforated
- if grommets or other such drainage devices are in place in the eardrum
- if the outer ear is infected or inflamed
- if you are allergic to any of the candle ingredients
- if antibiotics are being taken for an ear, nose or throat problem
- if root canal or other dental work has left the face sore
- if a cochlea implant is in place
